I assume you have an IDE hdd 100 GB on the laptop, so before you buy anything make sure what kind of HD you have in there. Get a 2.5" HD Enclosure and plug your laptop HD in it and plug it to a separate PC to see if you can see and save your data, then do a ScanDisk to check the HD.
